Checklist for National Visa (Long Term)

National Visa

Overview

A national visa can be granted:

  • in connection with granted residence in Slovakia,
  • in connection with the granting of residence in Slovakia (this does not apply in case of an application for a temporary residence for the purpose of business),
  • to a foreigner over 15 years of age, who is admitted for language training at a language school for at least 25 hours per week,
  • it is necessary for the fulfilment of the Slovak Republic's obligations under international treaties, or
  • in the interest of the Slovak Republic.

Validity of the national visa

The national visas are issued for stays longer than 3 months, with maximum validity of one year. The national visa may be issued:

  1. for 90 days to the holder of the residence permit in the Slovak Republic,
  2. for 120 days for submission of a residence permit application in the territory of the Slovak Republic,
  3. for the necessary period of time, in case of the family member of a foreigner who was granted asylum or subsidiary protection,
  4. for the necessary period of time, in case of the national visa issued in connection with the performance of commitments of the Slovak Republic under international treaties or for the benefit of the Slovak Republic.

Appointments for national visa applicants are available exclusively for nationals of Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda, or for nationals who are legally resident in the above-mentioned countries.

Appointments for national visa can be booked no more than 3 months prior to the date of appointment, and not earlier than 6 months before the start of the intended visit.

Photo Specifications

The photo must:

Applicants need to submit their Application form with the new photo format, as explained below:

General

The photo must fulfill the norm specified by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).

  • Use plain white background.
  • The photo must be no more than 6-months old.
  • Not tilted picture (portrait style) showing both edges of face clearly.
  • Close up of the head and top of the shoulders so that the face takes up 70–80% of the photograph.
  • Photo in sharp focus and clear.

Photo Size

The photo for each visa applicant submitted must measure:

  • The picture dimensions must be 240 pixels wide by 320 pixels high at least. A smaller picture will be rejected. For instance, a photo being 235 pixels by 320 pixels is not valid.
  • On the other hand, the photo should keep a proportion of 3.5 x 4.5 (width x height) within limits. However, 250 x 340 pixels picture would be valid, but not a 290 x 340 pixels one.
  • Finally, the image weight (size in Kbytes) can never be bigger than 120 Kbytes. Finally, the image weight (size in Kbytes) can never be bigger than 120 Kbytes.

Processing Time

The diplomatic mission shall decide about an application for the granting of national visa within 30 days from its receipt. The diplomatic mission may grant the national visa only after prior consent of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic.
